Freight Operations Platform
A freight-forwarding operation needed to connect quotation intake, internal handling, carrier booking, shipment visibility and completion into one controlled web workflow.

The problem
The shipment lifecycle crossed several operational steps and more than one external shipping-line system. Quotation requests had to be captured and validated. Teams had to obtain and manage carrier pricing, send quotations back to customers, confirm bookings once approved, keep shipment status visible, and close completed shipments without losing the context built up along the way.
When those steps are handled through disconnected channels, the operating risk is not only speed. It is inconsistent information, repeated manual entry, unclear ownership of status, and communication errors that were preventable.

A web-based operational system structured around the shipment lifecycle:

The workflow
Quotation intake
Customers submit shipment requirements through a structured request flow. Input is validated and stored for internal handling.
Quotation handling
Operations teams initiate and manage quotation requests against shipping-line processes, with manual intervention available where the external workflow requires a person.
Customer quotation
The platform assembles the relevant quotation information and supports sending it back to the requesting customer.
Booking
Once a quotation is accepted, the workflow advances into booking confirmation, carrying the shipment and container information forward instead of restarting the process in another tool.
Tracking
Each shipment is associated with a tracking path, so the relevant user can follow its progress through carrier information.
Completion
Authorised internal users mark a shipment complete, which updates the operational state and closes the workflow.
Engineering decisions that mattered
- State transitions are explicit rather than implied by which screen somebody is on. A shipment that crosses six steps over weeks needs one answer to where it is, and that answer has to survive the person who knows it going on leave.
- An API boundary sits between the web client and the backend so carrier integrations can be added and changed without the operational workflow above them moving. Carriers were always going to keep changing; the workflow was not.
- Quotation handling leaves room for a person. External shipping-line processes do not all expose an interface, so the workflow lets an operator intervene at that step rather than pretending the integration is complete.
- Access is role-based internally, because the step that closes a shipment changes the operational record and should not be available to everyone who can read it.
- Customer and quotation information is stored with the protection commercial pricing warrants, and the cloud deployment carries backup and recovery rather than assuming it.
- The same interface works for a customer submitting a request and an operator handling it, which is what kept quotation intake inside the system instead of back in an inbox.
Operational outcome
The delivered system turned quotation, booking, tracking and completion into one traceable operating flow. The value is control:
- structured information at intake
- fewer disconnected handoffs
- clearer operational state
- a consistent route from quotation to shipment completion
- a foundation for further carrier integration and automation
